New Hobby

So, I decided that while I love the cute little boutique clothes for Audrey, I just can't justify the prices! I mean, the clothes are super cute but every time I go to the store I think, "It just can't be THAT hard (or expensive) to make that!" The only sewing experience I have under my belt was over 11 years ago in a high school home ec class but I figured it just couldn't be that hard to figure out. Well, let me rephrase that- it couldn't be that hard to do WITH MY MOM'S HELP. ha ha And I have to say that with her help, it really wasn't that hard. But now that she is on vacation in Australia and not here to help, I'm expecting my next dress to be a little harder than the first one.

For the my first project, I made Audrey a little a-line dress out of a really nice silky wool that was on major clearance at the fabric store (no need to cry over wasted money if I screwed the whole thing up!). Lucky for me, with my mom's help, I think it turned out really cute- and more importantly, wearable! I haven't hemmed it yet but this is the finished result:

I'm going to have my friend embroider something cute on the front. I was thinking something girly or something for Easter (I made the dress big so it would fit her in the spring since it's a brighter pink color).

I am going to make a smaller dress just like the one above for the fall/winter out of this chocolate brown coduroy. I'm going to use the paisley fabric to line the inside of the dress and then make an "A" applique out of the same paisley fabric for the front of the dress. I'll post a picture when I'm done IF it turns out cute! :)

I also decided to make burp cloths for friends who are having babies (this number is getting high). In the past I have just bought these types of burp cloths, but they can cost around $10 per burp cloth and now that I was a little more familiar with a sewing machine, I figured that it couldn't possibly be THAT hard to make them myself. Below are 2 burp cloths that I gave a friend this past weekend at her baby shower.

I think they turned out pretty cute. Obviously, this friend is having a girl. :) I have to admit that so far I really enjoy sewing and already have ideas spinning in my head for Audrey's next outfit after the corduroy dress.

Impressive...I have been wanting to relearn how to sew after seeing some of the cutest fabrics and then some darling dresses on Etsy (I will forward you some). You will have to let me know if it is worth it : )

Wow, I am really impressed! I have been thinking lately, that I would like to learn to sew as well. I'm like you...it can't be that hard. I actually really want to learn to knit...scarves, hats, stuff like that. Mom swears that she can teach me, but I'm doubtful of her teaching skills. =) I'm a leftie and she's not. I love the burp cloths...what a great idea! I'll be on the lookout for cheap fabric for you!!!

I don't even know if we can be friends anymore. Me, who can't even sew a button on. Just one more reason you should move here...think of all our buttonless shirts. That is a way cute dress.

You are very talented. I wish I could do that kind of stuff, I would have so much fun making things for Baylee.
I love the pink dress you made. Very cute!!!

Love it all! I've read on my sewing forums that the Gerber burpclothes sold at Target 10 for $16 something are the best as far as washing and holding up. Just an fyi!

Cute dress!! You have many talents!!! Your little girl is adorable!! She does all the same funny things that my little boy does. Especially, the crawling on your legs thing! I just love this stage. :)
